My Journey to Becoming a Technical Writer
It was one quiet afternoon, with me sitting at my desk and wondering what could possibly make me happy. Well, I liked to write and explain, but had no idea where to start. That is when I came across technical writing, and thus began my journey.
How I Found My Path
First, I had no clue as to what I needed or was supposed to do. I asked myself, “Am I supposed to be some kind of techie whiz or an engineer?” Then, I learned the magic word in technical writing: explain. You just need to be curious and willing to learn.
What I Did to Get Started
-
Learn What Technical Writers Do
I read through what technical writers do: writing guides, FAQS, and instructions about tools and apps. Then I said to myself, “I can do that!”
-
Practicing My Writing
Then I started practicing. Whenever my friends needed help with gadgets, I would write them some simple step-by-step instructions. Also, I learned the use of tools like Microsoft Word in order to make my writings look good.
I realized that I would be required to give samples of the work that I had done. I created samples, typing out a coffee maker operation manual and going so far as a fake FAQ for my favorite video game.

My First Job
My first job wasn’t big; I helped a small business write instructions for their website. It wasn’t perfect, but they liked my work. This gave me the confidence to find more jobs online.
Lessons I Learned as a Technical Writer
This, at times, made me fear because I did not have a complete understanding of everything, but I learned that it was okay to ask questions asking questions and learning. They did not expect perfection from one’s person; they just wanted a try in that area.
Where am I now?
Now, I’m a technical writer! The work I do helps companies design their tools to be friendlier for their users. It really feels good to know my work matters. But guess what? You can too!
Tips for You as an up coming tech writer
- Start Small: Write about something you already know, like your favorite application or simple tool.
- Keep at It: Even tiny steps will build your abilities.
- Don’t Give Up: Every expert once had a first step.
Learning to be a technical writer is like learning to ride a bike. It is hard the first time you do it, but with practice and patience, you will get better. If I can do it, so can you.
